Snow Summit’s Rich History

NBC’s Olympic Coverage dug into the history of snowboarding and found themselves in Big Bear. Always the pioneers of the industry; we were one, if not the first, resort in the nation to welcome snowboarders onto the slopes. In the first years snowboarders were only allowed to ride midweek.   In 1997, we hosted the first winter X games  from (January 30 – February 2, 1997) with 38,000 people in attendance. 5 Things You May Not Know About Snow Summit

Big Bear Mountain Resorts has one of the largest snowmaking systems in the nation and have an unlimited supply of water thanks to Big Bear Lake. Snow Summit was the host of the first ever winter X-Games . The View Haus at the top of Snow Summit has some of the best views in the state for dining. Snow Summits Bike Park was the 5th most visited bike park in it’s first year of business last summer. Snow Summit has been in business for over 60 years.

Remembering Why (Winter X Games)

This may come as a surprise to many but when ESPN decided to have the first ever Winter X Games they came right here to Snow Summit! The inaugural Winter X Games were held in 1997. It was televised to 198 countries and 38,000 spectators attended the four day event. Winter X  has changed locations but it is still all about growing the industry and the wonderful sports involved in it. Skiing and snowboarding may be classified as action sports now that the X Games have made competitions out of them, but the simplicity remains. By simplicity we mean the fun times anyone can have by heading to the slopes. Lets face it 99% of us are no Shaun White!
